This is me!
I am a mother, wife, daughter, sister, friend, and doula.
Becoming a Doula
I became interested in birth work shortly after my first son was born. I had a typical hospital birth, using the majority of medical interventions. At the time, this was the only way I knew of. After giving birth to my son I was unhappy with my experience. I started researching alternatives to how I gave birth. During my research I learned about Doula's! I immediately knew this is what I wanted to do, for both myself and for others. I wanted to help families have the birth they wanted, regardless of what that was. I wanted to be sure they would be happy with their experience. I thought, if I can educate families on all the options available, than I can help them to have their birth, their way. If that means a planned cesarean section, great! If that means the use of pain medication, great! If that means a completely natural home, water birth, great! If that means mama will do what feels right at the time and just sees how it goes, great! So long as the families are educated on their options, they have the choice of the birthing experience they want!
I have since completed my certifying journey and had a second son; this one at home, surrounded by family and friends.
Mama's passions
Before having my boys I had very few opinions on parenting and thought I would just take it one day at a time. I was in for a huge surprise! I became one of those parents whose world is all about their kids. I couldn't, and still can't, get enough of everything birth and babies! Every chance I got I researched anything and everything that came at me. I found I was a very crunchy mama! I've become very passionate about attachment parenting, breastfeeding (in public, full term/ extended), intactivism (non-circumcision), baby led weaning, babywearing, cloth diapering, co-sleeping, and largely natural/ holistic health.
Training
I started my Doula journey shortly after my first sons first birthday. Since starting my training as a Labour Doula with Doula Training Canada (D.T.C.), I have taken workshops in Advanced Comfort Measures for Labour, Infant Massage and Reflexology, Placenta Preparation, & a number of other post partum practices. I completed my training as a placenta specialist with the International Placenta and Postpartum Association (I.P.P.A) in June 2015. I completed my doula certification in the spring of 2016.
Outside the Doula World
I have prior education in Criminology, Psychology, and Community and Justice Services (Corrections).
Before becoming a mother and a Doula, I worked in section classrooms and group homes, working with at risk youth.
I have my own sewing business where I create custom made clothing for babies, children and adults. My family has a small sheep farm where I help when I can. We grow all our own meat and sell lamb, beef and pork at local farmers markets.
